Stylized yet clearly anthropomorphic, this sculpture departs from the artist’s usual aesthetic approach. Yet the meaning of the sculpture, underscored by the title, continues his exploration of humankind’s place in the world. “The stone in this piece is Cheshire Quartzite from the lower Cambrian Period. It’s about 540 million years old, a couple of hundred million years older than the earliest dinosaurs. The high chromium stainless is very modern, contrasting the timelessness of the stone with the blink of time we think of as the present.”
