Granite Boulder
89"x34"x33"
2006
A number of key themes in Curtisí's work come together in Thought Prism. A granite boulder stands upright on a polished and cut granite base. The natural shape of the boulder is elevated by the formal design of the base in a manner that both brings contrast to man-made versus natural forms but also asks the viewer to contemplate or privilege nature's work.
A prism is cut into the boulder. Curtis uses holes in stone as a means of creating a lens, but depending on the position of the viewer the lens reveals less or more, allowing the viewer to gain multiple viewpoints. Like a labyrinth in a garden or a Miksang photograph, Thought Prism can be viewed as a tool for contemplation.
